Dr. Ali Alijanian offers bone grafting services in Walnut Creek, California, to help replace and reconstruct your jawbone in places where it has degenerated due to missing teeth. Once healed, this allows the patient to become a candidate for dental implants.
Major & Minor Bone Grafting
Missing teeth over a period of time can cause your jaw bone to atrophy, or resorb. This often results in poor quality and quantity of bone suitable for the placement of dental implants as well as long term shifting of remaining teeth and changes to facial structure. Most patients, in these situations, are not candidates for dental implants.
Fortunately, today we have the ability to grow bone where it is needed. This not only gives us the opportunity to place implants of proper length and width, but it also gives us a chance to restore functionality and aesthetic appearance.
Major Bone Grafting
Bone grafting can repair implant sites with inadequate bone structure due to previous extractions, gum disease, or injuries. The bone is either obtained from a tissue bank or your own bone is taken from the jaw, hip or tibia (below the knee). Sinus bone grafts are also performed to replace bone in the posterior upper jaw. In addition, special membranes may be utilized that dissolve under the gum to protect the bone graft, as well as encourage bone regeneration. This is called guided bone regeneration, or guided tissue regeneration.
Major bone grafts are typically performed to repair defects of the jaws. These defects may arise as a result of traumatic injuries, tumor surgery, or congenital defects. Large defects are repaired using the patient’s own bone. This bone is harvested from a number of different areas depending on the size needed. The skull (cranium), hip (iliac crest), and lateral knee (tibia), are common donor sites. These procedures are routinely performed in an operating room and require a hospital stay.
Veneer Grafting
Over a period of time, the jawbone associated with missing teeth atrophies is reabsorbed. This often leaves a condition in which there is poor quality and quantity of bone suitable for placement of dental implants. In these situations, most patients are not candidates for placement of dental implants.
With bone grafting, we now have the opportunity to not only replace bone where it is missing, but also the ability to promote new bone growth in that location! This not only gives us the opportunity to place implants of proper length and width, it also gives us a chance to restore functionality and esthetic appearance.
Autogenous Bone Grafts
Autogenous bone grafts, also known as autografts, is using your own bone. The bone is typically harvested from the side of the jaw. It is an in office procedure with minimal recovery. Autogenous bone grafts are advantageous in that the graft material is live bone, meaning it contains living cellular elements that enhance bone growth.
Other bone grafts, as well as graft substitutes, offered by our oral surgeon include:
- Allogenic Bone Graft — A graft taken from a donor that serves as a framework for the surrounding bone to grow around.
- Xenogeneic Bone Graft — A graft taken from the nonliving bone of an animal, usually a cow. The bone is processed at high temperatures to prevent the patient’s immune system rejecting it and acts as a framework for new bone to grow around.
- Processed allogenic bone in the form of putty, gel, chips and/or powder that can be injected via a syringe.
- Graft composites made of various materials that help promote natural bone growth.
- Bone morphogenetic proteins that are naturally produced in the patient’s body and promote the natural formation of bone.
